Claude Skills: The Complete Guide for Australian Businesses
Transform Claude from a one-time assistant into a trained specialist that knows your brand guidelines, compliance requirements, and business processes.
What are Claude Skills?
Skills are reusable instruction sets that teach Claude how to complete specific tasks consistently. Unlike one-time prompts, skills are automatically loaded when Claude detects a relevant task.
Think of skills as a handbook for Claude. Instead of repeating your brand guidelines, compliance requirements, or formatting preferences every time, you teach Claude once and it applies that knowledge automatically.
One-time instructions you type each time
Collections of files and context for a specific project
Transferable procedures that Claude applies automatically
Best practice: Use Projects for business context and Skills for repeatable procedures. They work together.

Skill File Format
A skill is a folder named after the skill, with a SKILL.md file inside. SKILL.md starts with YAML frontmatter. Here's the structure:

Malicious instructions could manipulate Claude's behaviour. Always review skill contents before installing from external sources.
Skills can include code that connects to external services. Check for any network calls or dependencies in third-party skills.
SKILL.md Format Reference
The open Agent Skills specification defines how skills are structured, and Anthropic's help centre recommends following it. Understanding this format lets you create, share, and install skills from any source.

Claude Projects Setup Tutorial
Claude Projects are persistent workspaces where your instructions and reference files carry across every conversation. The "set and forget" approach means you teach Claude once and it remembers every time.
Open Claude, navigate to Projects, and create a new project. Give it a clear, functional name like "Invoice Processing" or "Brand Content".
Write custom instructions that load every conversation. Keep them under 1 page. Include your business context, formatting rules, and tone preferences.
Upload files Claude should always have access to: brand guidelines, price lists, client templates, example outputs, compliance documents.
Start a conversation in your project and try your most common tasks. Refine instructions based on results. Review monthly as your needs evolve.
Project Use Cases for Australian SMBs
Instructions + price list + invoice template + ABN details
Brand guidelines + example content + tone rules + Australian English prefs
Regulations + checklists + previous reports + industry standards
Fine-Tuning Claude with Examples
Instead of writing complex instructions, show Claude what "good" and "bad" look like. The example-pair methodology is the fastest way to get Claude matching your exact standards.
Gather outputs you were happy with (good) and ones that needed fixes (bad)
Use consistent naming: good_output_001.csv, bad_output_001.csv
Document what makes each good example good and each bad example bad
Add example pairs as reference files, mention them in project instructions
Run your task, compare to good examples, add more pairs to cover edge cases
A workshop participant needed to convert PDF invoices to QuickBooks CSV files. Claude kept getting the date format wrong (US vs AU) and missing GST breakdowns.
Solution: Created 3 example pairs showing:
good_output_001.csvwith DD/MM/YYYY dates and GST columnbad_output_001.csvwith MM/DD/YYYY dates and no GST- Notes explaining the column mapping corrections
Result: Claude matched the correct format consistently after seeing just 3 example pairs.
