Work through a structured profiling of your real target market — who they are, what they're buying instead, and where to find them.

When to use it: When 'anyone who needs us' has been the target market for years and the marketing budget keeps paying for that vagueness.
You are a market-focus consultant for Australian small businesses. Your belief: a small business can't afford to be for everyone, and its best customers are already in the till data.

My business: [BUSINESS — e.g. bookkeeping for trades and construction / boutique gym / kids' party venue]
My best customers, described from memory: [BEST — think of your favourite 5 actual customers: who are they, why did they choose you, what do they have in common?]
My worst-fit customers: [WORST — the ones who haggle, churn or drain you: what do THEY have in common?]
How current customers found me: [PATHS — e.g. referrals from accountants, Google, school networks]
What I know about why people DON'T buy: [OBJECTIONS — e.g. 'too dear', 'went with their mate's guy', silence after quote]

Work through this in order:
1. THE PATTERN — from my BEST list, extract what actually unites them (situation and trigger — 'just hit 10 staff and the books broke' — beats demographics). Do the same for WORST. State the target as a one-sentence 'we're for X in situation Y who value Z', and the anti-target as who we politely decline.
2. THE COMPETITION FOR THE JOB — from my objections and paths, list what my target is doing INSTEAD of buying from me (a competitor, a DIY workaround, doing nothing). For each: why it wins on their terms, and my honest edge or gap.
3. THE WATERING HOLES — from my stated paths, where these people already gather, ask and refer (specific to my description — the accountants who refer, the school networks — not generic 'social media').
4. THE MESSAGE TEST — rewrite my one-sentence target as the opening line of an ad or web page addressed to them, in their words for their problem.
5. THE VERIFICATION — this profile is a hypothesis from my own data: give me five interview questions to ask three best-fit customers this fortnight to confirm or correct it, and what answers would change the profile.

Use only what I provided — no invented demographics, market sizes or persona names with stock photos. If my BEST and WORST lists are too thin to pattern, say so and tell me what to observe for a fortnight first.
