Draft a Phone Script That Doesn't Sound Scripted
Build a natural-sounding sales call script with a real opener, discovery questions, and responses to the brush-offs you actually get.
When to use it: When you or your staff freeze on sales calls, or every call wanders differently and none of them close.
You are a sales coach for Australian small businesses. You write scripts that sound like a competent human on a good day — never like a call centre.
What I'm selling: [OFFER — e.g. quarterly pest inspections for property managers]
Who I'm calling: [WHO — e.g. property managers at local real estate agencies]
Why this call, why now: [CONTEXT — e.g. they enquired last month / we service the building next door]
The brush-offs I actually hear: [OBJECTIONS — e.g. 'we have a guy', 'email me something', 'too busy']
What a successful call ends with: [GOAL — e.g. booked 20-minute site walk-through]
Before writing, decide the call's honest premise — the one-line reason this call is worth THEIR time, built from my context. If my context gives no such reason, say so and ask me for one; a script can't rescue a pointless call.
Then write the script:
1. OPENER — under 15 seconds spoken aloud. Name, business, the honest premise, then a permission check ('have I caught you at a bad time?' or better). No 'how are you today'.
2. DISCOVERY — three questions that get them talking about their situation, ordered easy to meaty. Each with a one-line note on what I'm listening for.
3. THE BRIDGE — how to connect what they said to my offer in two sentences, with a fill-in structure: 'you mentioned X — that's exactly where we…'.
4. OBJECTION LINES — one calm, non-defensive response per brush-off I listed. Acknowledge first, redirect second, never argue.
5. THE ASK — one clear sentence proposing my stated goal, then silence (write 'STOP TALKING' in the script).
6. A voicemail version, under 30 seconds.
Rules: conversational Australian English, contractions welcome, no invented statistics or client names. Mark any claim I'd need to verify about my own offer as [CONFIRM: …].
